• Brian Tolbert
    Brian.jpg

Brian guides our efforts in business development and strategy. Before joining Bernard, he was living the high life in Cleveland, Ohio, as one of the top Sales Consultants for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Helping small to medium-sized businesses with client entertainment needs, Brian was managing an account base of over $3 million and watching LeBron play every night. Pretty flashy stuff, you might say. But, Brian had heard his own clients express frustration about healthcare costs and saw the opportunity to help solve a major problem. So he bid LeBron farewell and partnered with Bernard. Brian is a graduate of Vanderbilt University, where he has a degree in Human and Organizational Development with a minor in philosophy. He has also earned his MBA from Vanderbilt's Owen School of Management.

  • DeAnna Lax
    DeAnna.jpg

DeAnna is in charge of supporting passionately the employees of our clients who have Health Savings Account-based health plans. As a nurse, she is in a unique position to help when one is struggling to figure out the best price for a certain prescription drug or other simple procedure. After all, who else are you going to call to help with that? She has helped many employees each save hundreds of dollars on prescription drugs simply by knowing which drugstore has the best price for a given drug. Perhaps she can help you, too. DeAnna worked as a nurse in Nashville and also spent time in medical sales. She possesses a B.S. in nursing. Prior to earning her degree, she was an artist and some of her work can be seen here.

  • Craft Hayes
    Craft.jpg

Craft is a business development honcho, helping companies take advantage of this new tax gift that is Health Savings Accounts. If Bernard Health ever develops a legislative arm, Craft also sports some political credentials that could come in handy such as being Student Body President at Tennessee Tech. During his Presidential reign, he rallied some serious student support to buy power from clean energy sources. The effort he led turned into a model for universities state-wide. Besides his own business development responsibilities, Craft also helps new members of the development team at Bernard gain their footing when it comes to learning how to explain HSA's clearly to client management teams and employees. Craft has his undergraduate degree as well as his MBA from Tennessee Tech.

  • Jocelyn Aders
    Jocelyn.jpg

Jocelyn is in charge of all things operational. With a background in operations at an Inc. 500 company, she knows how to make things run smoothly. To illustrate where she shines: have you ever thought your health insurance renewal process was a mess? Or have you ever received your ID cards late, causing stress and confusion? And then have you wondered "Does it always have to be this way??" Jocelyn would kindly tell you "Why no, it doesn't." And lest we forget, she also happens to be awesome. If you're not sure, just ask her...she'll tell you. She told us on her third day :). Seriously, she did let that slip and, just as seriously, we never doubted it. Jocelyn is the proud possessor of a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee.

  • Amber Van Dam
    Amber.jpg

Amber solves problems for our clients and their employees. This makes them happy and in some circles has earned her the nickname "Ms. Fix It." Hailing from this part of Michigan, Amber's background includes working with patients at a major cancer center as well as with large groups at Michigan's second largest health insurance company. A huge NASCAR fan (Tony Stewart is her driver), as a child Amber wanted to live in an airplane when she grew up. She used to draw floor plans of her dream "home", and we hope she one day achieves that dream. In the meantime, when a Bernard client runs into a problem with a carrier or provider, Amber's background puts her in the best position to help, ahem, *fly* through it. She is a graduate of the Ross Medical Education Center.

  • G.C. Maxwell
    GC.jpg

A self-taught break-dancer, G.C. works in business development. He spends most of his days speaking with business owners, office managers, HR directors, CFO’s, and controllers about how groups can save by adopting a HSA-based health plan strategy with Bernard. G.C. then clearly communicates the strategy’s benefits to employees, gaining their buy-in and trust in the plan. Being the most likable guy at Bernard certainly helps him in these sometimes-difficult endeavors, as it did when he ferociously competed in and won the title of Homecoming King at his alma mater. (The break-dancing probably helped with that, too, although we believe he is yet to share that talent with a prospective client). Our majesty possesses a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from Miami University of Ohio.

  • Matt Kleymeyer
    Matt.jpg

Matt leads all efforts at Bernard's Indiana Headquarters. This includes helping clients take advantage of HSA-based health plans as well as managing carrier relationships. With a background in development at a top Indiana university and as a Director in the healthcare division at a respected commercial development firm, he brings a broad perspective to the company. On top of day-to-day responsibilities at the helm of Bernard Indy, early on Matt also took the reins in the corporate "spirit" department as the first to author a verse to the "Bern-dawg shuffle," which rivals even the Chicago Bears' 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle. Yes, that's right, thanks to Matt we have our very own "shuffle." It's quite good and, obviously, quite proprietary. Our rhymer-in-chief earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from DePauw University as well as his MBA in Finance from Butler University.

  • Ryan McCostlin
    Ryan.jpg

When it comes to being on the front lines helping the people, Ryan is the man. Bolstering Bernard’s efforts to be the most trusted advisor when it comes to helping individuals plan how to pay for medical expenses, Ryan is in charge of opening our first healthcare retail store. Whether it is Medicare, group insurance, individual insurance, medical bills, COBRA, or something we don’t even know about yet because it’s not coming until Phase IXWLXIIL of healthcare reform, Ryan is making sure Bernard will be there to help you figure it out. Previously, he worked with Stockamp & Associates to help billing departments of American hospitals improve their processes. He also has experience with Sears Holdings, figuring out social media in retail. Ryan has a degree in Human and Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University and is also an MBA graduate of the Yale School of Management.

  • Katie Cotnam
    Katie.jpg

Katie's role at Bernard Health is twofold. First, she's on the front lines of healthcare reform, and Katie is resource numero uno for clients who have questions about Medicare, individual health insurance, COBRA, and medical bills.  Second, she's our primary source of West Coast flavor.  Katie tells us the West Coast includes states other than California, though, and since she's from Oregon, she is more likely to teach you how to rock climb than teach you how to Dougie.  Katie earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carroll College in Montana, and she has worked as a teacher and as an AmeriCorps volunteer with the Vanderbilt Coalition for Healthy Aging.

  • Tony Holland
    Tony.jpg

Tony leads all Bernard efforts in the great state of Kentucky.  Hailing from Louisville, Tony spent a period of time in Nashville before returning home to take over his family's tax advisory business.  He grew that business from one location in Louisville to 28 locations throughout the city, and Kentuckians knew Holland Income Tax as a trusted tax advisor.  With hundreds of employees, Tony experienced first-hand the myriad challenges employers face when it comes to providing a good and affordable health plan.  After  Jackson Hewitt purchased Holland Income Tax, Tony also experienced the frustrations individuals and families face when it comes to finding a trusted health plan strategy advisor.  When he learned about Bernard Health and its mission, his frustration with the problem evolved into a passion for helping to solve it.  Tony possesses a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University.

  • Alex Tolbert
    Alex.jpg

Alex participates in business development and sets strategy for helping the employees of our clients. In Spring 2006, Alex learned about Health Savings Accounts and quickly became very passionate about them. Because his loving family could only listen to him for so long, he decided to take his message to businesses and individuals who would benefit the most from it. Bernard Health was born. Alex is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where he has a degree in International Studies and a degree in finance from the Wharton School. He is also a JD/MBA graduate of Vanderbilt University, has passed all three levels of the CFA examination, and is fluent in Spanish.
